It’s that time of year again – the Wimbledon Championships are in full swing! With thousands of spectators flocking to London and viewers tuning in around the world to watch, Wimbledon always captures the interest and hearts of its spectators.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is widely regarded as the most prestigious. The first Wimbledon championships were held in 1877 at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in London & they have been held there ever since.
The Energy at Wimbledon
There’s no denying the power of Wimbledon to draw our attention every year. But what about the energy power that is used to swing the tennis rackets or mow the courts? That’s something I never considered before! But think about all of the calories that the finals must burn! With tennis’ shining stars battling it out, the power at Wimbledon is immense.
First Utility has created some intriguing graphics that demonstrate what home appliances we could power if that energy usage could be harnessed. Wouldn’t that be glorious?? Running Netflix from the power generated at a tennis final would be so much fun!!

You all know how important my iPhone is to me, it’s basically attached to my hand at all times. It’s an amazing thought that I could charge my smartphone for an entire year based on the amazing energy created at one women’s final! That’s girl power at its finest right there.
30 Men’s Finals
Clearly, a lot of energy is used in to run a house for an entire week. It’d take the past three decades of men’s finals to power a house for seven days. This graphic really puts household energy use in perspective for me.
9 Groundskeepers Mowing
Did you know that Wimbledon is the only major tennis tournament still played on a grass court? Let’s not forget about the groundskeepers who work so hard to keep the beautiful natural grass courts in top condition. If we could harness their energy from mowing the courts we could power a microwave for a whole year!
1 Entire Singles Tournament
Last year’s championships had an impressive total attendance of 493,928! With all of those thirsty spectators, there were nearly as many glasses of Pimm’s served as cups of tea and coffee! 330,000 cups of tea and coffee and 320,000 glasses of Pimm’s to be exact. It’d be pretty cool if the tennis tournaments themselves could boil the kettles!
It’s amazing to think of the energy generated at Wimbledon. It’s truly immense! Thinking of the energy in terms of household appliances really puts the power of Wimbledon into perspective.
