Sony Xperia XZ1 – my first impressions

*This post is in collaboration with Sony

I’m excited to let you know that I am working with Sony to try out their new Xperia XZ1!! Regular readers know that I love my techy things so this is a real treat for me! This is my first Sony phone and I have jumped right in with both feet.

Today I just want to let you know my first impressions of the phone. In a couple of weeks, I will put together a blog post and YouTube video about some of the phone’s features and the amazing camera!

Easy Set Up

My first impression of any phone begins with the setup process. While I’m a lover of techy things, I am not a lover of following directions. I get easily frustrated by technical or unclear instructions.

I’m delighted to report that the setup process on the Sony Xperia XZ1 was super easy. It’s step by step, screen by screen simple questions which is right up my street!!

I had the initial set up done in minutes. Here’s a shot from Cuddle Fairy’s Instagram Story

Screen Size

As a blogger, I love a big screen on my phone. A large screen makes it easier to see emails, tweets and to have plenty of space for apps to be displayed.

I’m loving the large screen size of the Sony Xperia XZ1. And while it has a nice big screen the phone is thin and lightweight making it easy to hold.

Finger Print Security

During set up there’s the option to save fingerprints that can be used to unlock the phone. You can also have a number or a shape for unlocking.

The fingerprint pad / on & off switch is located on the right-hand side of the Sony Xperia which makes it a natural and easy place to unlock the phone. I find it quite natural to place my thumb on the side of the phone and the phone unlocks easily.

The Sony allows up to 10 unique fingerprints to be saved so I could go through and save all of my fingerprints so that no matter which way I pick up the phone, I can easily unlock it.

Fingerprint manager can be found under settings – Lock screen & security.

Amazing Selfies

Ok so as a blogger, the selfie camera is an important feature of a phone. Trying to cram people into a shot is difficult and people often need to resort to a selfie stick to fit the group in.

The Sony Xperia XZ1 answers this problem with an amazing solution. It’s camera has a nice wide lens which will fit more people in without needing a selfie stick!

AND they have a cool selfie feature. If you hold your hand up in selfie mode, the phone recognizes this and sets a 3-second timer for the perfect selfie!

Touching on my earlier mention about following instructions, Sony very kindly puts notes under each app that tells you how to use it when you open the app for the first time. The first time I turned the camera to selfie mode it told me about the hand up trick in a simple and clear way. And for this, I’m very grateful!!

For comparison sake, I took a selfie with the Xperia XZ1 & a selfie with my current smartphone. These two photos are taken without any filters and haven’t been edited in any way. I held the phones at the same arm length.

As you can see, the Sony photo on the right is a much wider shot. You can imagine fitting a group of people around me with ease. In my opinion, the colour and sharpness of the Sony Xperia photo is superior and the Sony phone dealt with the glare from the window behind me much better.

Awesome Camera

As you can see by my comparison photos above, the camera on the Sony Xperia XZ1 is pretty cool! I am looking forward to using it for the next few weeks and I will share my experiences with you then!!

What I’ve learned so far about the Xperia XZ1 is that it uses Sony’s Motion Eye technology which is what’s used in their expensive RX series cameras. This enables the Sony smartphone camera to capture spectacular shots by using predictive capture, autofocus burst and super slow motion video recording.

The Xperia camera sounds ideal for capturing kids in action, especially this Christmas – mine never sit still for photos!! As Sony says… Never miss a family moment again with the Xperia XZ1 smartphone and its ground-breaking Motion Eye™ Camera.

I took this photo of our stove with the Xperia XZ1. The dancing flames from the fire often cause photos from my current smartphone to turn out blurry. I think this one from the Sony Xperia turned out beautifully.

I will give more details about the cool camera features once I try them out more myself, so stay tuned! You can find out more about Sony Xperia XZ1 features and its camera on the Sony Website.

I’m reviewing the Sony Xperia in conjunction with Tots100 & a few other bloggers. You can read their first impression posts here:
