5 Signs Your Child is Unhappy at School

collaborative post

It wouldn’t be the most unusual thing in the world for your child to not like school, but it is something that you should be wary of. There may be things that have happened, affecting their motivation to go to school. Here are 5 signs from a group of school mentors to help you identify whether something is wrong.

They Are Falling Behind

When children aren’t doing so well at school, it’s usually an indicator that something’s not right. They may be struggling academically or have other issues that they’re dealing with like bullying. If you or their teacher have noticed that they are now suddenly unable to concentrate and are struggling at school, it may be worth having conversations to see if there is anything that’s bothering them.

Behavioural Issues

Another sign is that they have started displaying behavioural issues. School is where children spend the bulk of their day and if that’s not something they enjoy, it may affect their behaviour. They may become more disruptive as they don’t know how to deal with what they are feeling.

They Don’t Want to Talk About School

It’s important for parents to show an active interest in their child’s education and learn about their day. If your child’s reluctant to share details, it may be because they don’t want to think about it or have had an unpleasant experience.

Non-Verbal Signs

There are many non-verbal signs that allude to something being off. Bedwetting is linked to anxiety and if it’s something that your child is doing, it may be because they’re worried about school. Eating is another. When children are worried, their eating habits can change. They can eat too much or too little. While they should try to eat, it’s important to not force-feed them as it can make them feel sick.

Frequent Illness

If your child’s ill and not well enough to go to school, they should be seen by a doctor. They can offer help to relieve the symptoms so they’re back at school in no time. If they are repeatedly getting ill and it’s becoming suspicious, it may be their way of trying to avoid school as they’re not enjoying it.
