A Mindful Guide to Organising Your Family Home

collaborative guest post

In the beautiful-but-bustling chaos of family life, our homes truly are sanctuaries. They’re the setting for many of our most cherished memories, and the safe harbour from the world outside. But let's be honest, sometimes that same harbour can feel more like a shipwreck of scattered toys, overflowing laundry baskets, and endless piles of paperwork. Constant clutter can all too easily create a low-level hum of stress that quickly snowballs to affect the whole family.

But what if we could shift our perspective, just a little? Never mind worrying about an organised home that achieves sterile perfection, but how about mindfully curating a nurturing environment where your family can thrive? The journey of decluttering and organising really doesn’t need to be a chore. In fact, with a few small steps, you can make it a positive and even fun activity that brings everyone closer together, creating not just a tidier space, but a more peaceful and joyful home life too.

Mindful Decluttering: A New Approach to Tidying Up

For many of us, the first step towards a calmer home will also be the most daunting one: the declutter! But as overwhelming as it all sounds, you can transform the task from an overwhelming obstacle into a liberating experience by approaching it with just a little touch of mindfulness.

Despite the images that the word conjures up, decluttering isn't just about throwing things away. Do it mindfully, and it becomes just as much about being intentional and conscious of the items we choose to keep in our lives. Ask yourself: does this item serve a purpose? Does it bring joy? Does it align with the life I want to live?

A simple yet incredibly effective way to begin is with the "Four-Box Method". As you tackle a room, drawer, or even just a single shelf, grab four boxes and label them: Keep, Donate, Store, and Dispose.

  • Keep: These are the items you love and use regularly. They either already have a designated place in your home or you’re in the process of finding one for them.

  • Donate: These are items in good condition that you don’t need anymore - but could bring joy to someone else.

  • Store: This box is for sentimental items you want to keep hold of or seasonal things (like Christmas decorations). You don’t want to throw them out, but you don't need daily access to them.

  • Dispose: This is for items that are broken, expired, or otherwise no longer serve a purpose.

Getting the children involved in the decluttering can be a wonderful teachable moment. Frame it as a positive activity. For younger children, you could make it a game of "Toy Treasure Hunt", where they help decide which toys could go on a new adventure to a charity shop for other children to enjoy. For older children, it can be a valuable lesson in responsibility and generosity, giving them ownership over their own space.

Creating Zones for a More Harmonious Home

Once you’ve decluttered, the next step is to create a sense of order. This is where "zoning" comes into play. With designated zones for different activities, you’ll quickly give everything a logical home, which makes tidying up infinitely easier. What’s more, it can also help to reduce that very real feeling of chaos when you have items for work, play, and relaxation all jumbled together.

To get started, think about the flow of your home and the potential clutter hotspots:

  • The Entryway: This area very often becomes an all-out dumping ground! Create a simple system with a hook for each family member's coat, a basket for shoes, and a small dish for keys.

  • The Living Room: Aim for a balance between cosy and contained. Use furniture with hidden storage, like an ottoman, to store blankets and magazines. Also, think about designating a specific corner or a set of shelves as a "play zone" where toys belong.

  • Children's Bedrooms: Encourage your children to keep their own space tidy by making it easier for them to do so. Use clear boxes for toys so they can see what's inside, and low shelving so they can safely reach everything themselves. A small table and chair can create a perfect "homework station" or "craft corner".

Smart and Stylish Storage Solutions

When it comes to maintaining a beautifully organised home, effective storage is your secret weapon. Of course, the right solutions hide clutter, but they can also effortlessly add to your space’s style and personality. It's all about finding your balance between looks and practicality.

Woven baskets are a great choice for holding everything from blankets in the living room to toys in the playroom, and they also add a soft and natural texture to your décor. And if you’d love to display those treasured items and fancy books without taking up precious floor space, floating shelves are your friend. Whichever solution you go for, don’t forget to include multi-functional elements, like a coffee table with drawers, a bench with storage, or a bed with built-in compartments.

If you have some larger items to contend with, or a few things you need to store away in the garage, loft or playroom, it's definitely worth investing in a few heavy-duty storage solutions. Stackable storage offers a great way to maximise space and keep everything nice and tidy. Euro stacking containers are a great option for this. They’re durable and designed to be stacked securely, which is perfect for things like seasonal clothing, camping gear, or bulkier toys that aren't in constant rotation.

Maintaining a Tidy Home: Making it a Family Habit

The real magic happens when the organisation becomes a regular part of your family's daily rhythm. The key to getting there is building small, consistent habits that don't feel overwhelming.

Introduce a "10-Minute Tidy-Up" every evening before bedtime. Put on some music and have everyone pitch in to put things back in their zones. It's amazing what the whole family can achieve in just ten minutes of focused teamwork!

Another simple hack that can make a surprising difference is implementing a basic weekly routine. Perhaps Sunday is the day for changing bedsheets and clearing out old food from the fridge, for instance. Involving children in these routines teaches them valuable life skills and helps build a real sense of shared responsibility for their home. Remember to use positive reinforcement and praise their efforts - simple "thank you for helping" or "the living room looks so lovely now" can go a long way.

A Home That Nurtures Your Family

Creating an organised home isn’t a destination - it’s a never-ending, dynamic journey that evolves through different stages of family life. But remember that the goal here isn’t achieving a flawless, show-home existence - it's simply about reducing the daily friction that clutter can cause. In turn, you’ll create more time and mental space for what truly matters: connecting with your loved ones.
