How to Raise a Team Player

collaborative post

When they are older, your child will likely encounter situations where they must talk and work with others. They may not necessarily like them but will need to work with them in order to achieve common goals. It’s a valuable trait that can help them to go far in life. Below are some ways in which you can explore this with your child.

This post is in collaboration with a senior school in Surrey.

Team Sports

Sport is a great way to teach children about working with one another as most are group games. They will need to all work together to achieve common goals and that involves several things - respect, communication and cooperation. As well as in PE, children can join sporting clubs outside of school. It will give them the opportunity to get better at the games, make friends and learn about team dynamics.

Selflessness

You can’t only think about yourself when working in a team. You must think about those around you and how your actions affect them. This is something that you can help your child with by encouraging them to think about other people and their feelings.

Communication

Communication is a large part of working in any team. Without it, there’s no real coordination and it’s difficult to get anywhere. There are various ways in which you can help your child with their communication. For example, you can help them with their confidence so that they aren’t afraid to speak up and voice their ideas.

Conflict Resolution

Staying on the theme of communication, when in a group you may need to have difficult conversations and deal with conflict. It’s likely that you won’t all think the same and being able to articulate yourself correctly can help you to manage those situations well and without any agro.

Respect

Everyone deserves to be treated equally and with respect. It goes back to treating others how you’d like to be treated and is something that you can teach your child by raising them to be thoughtful and considerate.

Family Games Night

Another way that you can help is through playing group activities at home. If there are enough of you, you can host a family games night where you must work together in small groups and tackle challenges.

We hope that this post gave you some ideas as to how you can raise a good team player. For more posts like this, take a look at our blog. It hosts a range of tips and guides for parents.
