How to Raise an Inquisitive Child

Curiosity is an invaluable trait for both children and adults alike, as it’s what allows us to develop our knowledge and learn new skills. Parents can help their children to become more inquisitive, using a variety of techniques, so that they’re always find out new information and exploring how the world works. Read on for some tips from a nursery in Harpenden.

Answer their Questions

Children are always asking questions, and it can feel a little irritating sometimes, but it’s important that you try and answer them as best you can. If you turn them away or tell them you’re too busy, they might feel reluctant to ask you questions in the future. If you’re not sure what the answer is, use it as an opportunity to do some research together.

Ask Your Own Questions

Show your child that asking random questions is perfectly normal by asking lots of your own. Even if you just voice your thoughts and ask rhetorical questions, you will demonstrate that being inquisitive is nothing to be ashamed of.

Next time you’re eating a piece of fruit, you could say something like “Where do you think this fruit was grown?”. If you’re watching a period drama together, ask them “Why do you think people from this era dressed that way?”. Not only will you show them that being curious is normal, but you may also encourage them to have their own inquisitive thoughts.

Promote Interests

Your child will naturally be more inquisitive about topics that interest them, so try and encourage them to pursue some hobbies. If they have demonstrated an interest in space, for example, you could invest in a telescope for their birthday, or a gardening set if they seem to like plants. By encouraging them to pursue their interests, you will help them take their learning to the next level.

Encourage New Experiences

Try and help your child experience new things on a regular basis, to keep them stimulated and give them something new to think about. This could be something as simple as walking the dog in a different park or trying a new recipe at dinner.

The trick is to spark your child’s curiosity by giving them something to be curious about in the first place. While sticking to a routine is great for their stability, mixing things up from time to time will help your child with their learning.
