The benefits of a pergola with retractable roof

collaborative guest post

A pergola with a retractable roof is one of my favourite outdoor structures. Forget about gazebos, forget about garden arbours. Modern pergolas are truly something special – these feature a retractable roof that can open and close as you wish. So, if you are outside enjoying the weather underneath your pergola and it quickly starts raining, all you have to do is click a button to close the roof and continue enjoying yourself. For me, it sounded like a dream and it still does!

Today, I’ve partnered up with Designer Shade Solutions, pergola with retractable roof specialists to help me share all the benefits of these fabulous pergolas with you. Maybe you have never heard about retractable pergolas. Perhaps you have been looking for a new outdoor structure for your garden, I’d definitely keep an eye on modern pergolas.

The truth about traditional pergolas.

Traditional pergolas with a simple lattice roof might look lovely but are they practical? Not in my book. I’d go as far as saying, not in anyone’s book. I believe that practicality is essential to any outdoor structure, after all, they are an investment for your home – you should be able to use it as much as possible. Unfortunately, in British homes, a lattice style roof on a pergola will not help with the unpredictable British weather.

I’m not the only one that thinks like this, The Chequers Bath blog shared the downsides of traditional pergolas, from only offering shade to not being able to use it during most of the year. “Standard pergolas only offer shade. So, forget about using your outdoor space for most of the year. Is it a bit chilly? Did it start to rain slightly? No more pergola for you. With the incredibly unpredictable English weather, I have a hard time seeing your average pergola as a good home investment.”

What are modern pergolas?

Modern pergolas are modern versions of traditional pergolas. These innovative pergolas feature a retractable roof that can easily open and close. She Might Be Loved also shared that some types of pergolas can also feature roof slabs that can tilt to offer shade, “Metal pergolas with retractable roofs can also feature tilting slabs for some shade.”

The benefits of pergolas with roofs.

1) Versatile.

Buckets of Tea says that modern pergolas are highly versatile structures. “Modern pergolas can be installed in a variety of outdoor spaces. These can be installed on top of your outdoor dining area to highlight this space, can be attached to your property as an extension and much more.”

But that’s not all. Fizzy Peaches also comments about the versatility of modern pergolas. “These pergolas with retractable roofs are incredibly versatile. Not only can they be installed anywhere in your patio, garden, terrace as self-supporting structures but these can also be attached to your property as an extension to your current space.”

2) Weatherproof.

A pergola with roof offers a weatherproof solution to maximise the time spent outside. There are plenty of waterproof pergola roof ideas but none is as practical as these retractable roofs. Plus, these can be coupled with glass sides to create a fully enclosed space that is 100% weatherproof.

3) Customisable.

Pergolas can be completely customisable. These can be made of various materials and can be combined with a variety of add-ons to suit all of your requirements. So, whether you want a wooden pergola with retractable roof or an aluminium pergola with retractable roof, it can be done. Pergolas can also have fabric roofs or even glass roofs. If you have an idea in mind for your dream pergola, I’d recommend reaching out to the team at Designer Shade Solutions and talking to them about your project.
