The Benefits of Coding Lessons for Kids

collaborative guest post

The curriculum has changed somewhat in recent years in line with industries and the world around us. A prime example is the introduction of coding lessons. Children have the opportunity to learn coding at school from as early as primary school where they are taught the basics and are given the chance to write their own code.

This post highlights the benefits of coding lessons for children and shares tips from a secondary school in West Sussex on how you can support them in their learning.

Digital Literacy

Technology is everywhere we go, and with an AI revolution underway it’s vital that children have an understanding of how it works. Learning advanced digital skills such as coding can give children an edge and future proof their careers. According to experts, by 2030 we can expect 75% of jobs to involve some form of digital skill so it’s ideal for them to start learning now.

Teaches Children Patience

With everything accessible at the click of a button, patience is something that children often struggle with. While working with technology allows them to create shortcuts, the process of coding isn’t straightforward by any means as there’s usually trial and error involved. This can help children develop patience and the resilience to bounce back from challenges.

Problem-Solving Skills

To continue on from the point above, children are able to strengthen their problem-solving skills as they encounter obstacles that they need to overcome. They must also use their problem solving to apply theory they’ve learned and write code.

Creativity

Coding provides children an outlet for their creativity. While technical, there are endless outcomes when it comes to coding. Children can create their own apps and websites to their exact liking.

It's fair to say that not many parents understand coding so we have created the following tips on how you can support your child.

  • Look for Tutorials: There are many guides online that can help your child if there’s anything in particular that they are struggling with, or video tutorials if they are lucky.

  • Interactive Coding Games: There are educational games covering a whole host of school subjects, such as coding. They can give your child lessons on areas they have been working on in school and the practice that they need to improve.

  • Learn to Code Yourself: The basics of coding are pretty straightforward to get your head around. If you are struggling however, as a little revision exercise, you can have your child explain to you.

While a great skill for children to develop, it’s important to remember that children all have their own talents and abilities. Practice will of course help but ensure that you’re not forcing your child to work on something that they dislike.
