The Top 5 Home Modifications for the Elderly

Updated: Nov 13, 2024

collaborative post

As we get older, certain elements of our home, such as the stairs or bathtub, can become challenging. It's always good to consider these aspects when you are selecting a home. But, in many cases, houses are made without ageing in mind.

Many people would prefer to age in place so that they are still in their home, near family and friends and have that sense of familiarity and community. That being said, it can be intimidating to stay in the home if it isn't designed with your needs in mind. That's where modifications to the home can make a positive impact on your comfort and safety.

In this post, I will share five home modification ideas to support the elderly in staying comfortably in their home.

Adapting Bathroom Facilities

Bathrooms can become difficult to use for several reasons. First, if there is a bathtub it can be difficult and dangerous to get in and out of. Second, if there isn't enough space in the bathroom to comfortably move around. Third, if the bathroom isn't on the ground floor.

Moving the bathroom to the ground floor would be important if it isn't already there. Create as much open space as possible in the bathroom by removing any decorations or anything that isn't necessary. The door frame can be widened as well.

Fitting an Age Co Mobility walk-in shower with a seat and handrails would be a big improvement. It would be easy to go in and out of the shower, and the seat and handrails will make it a more safe place. Alternatively, there are walk-in bathtubs too.

Installing a Stair Lift

If moving facilities downstairs isn't an option, or if you love having access to your upstairs, then you can consider having a stairlift or through floor lift fitted. There are new models that are quite stylish and fit nicely with the home decor. They will allow you to be able to go up and down the stairs as much as you like.

Medical Alert System

It's simple to have an alert system installed and it gives great peace of mind both to the homeowner and to their family. If there is any concern, you simply press the button and help is immediately contacted. It can be via a wearable device such as a bracelet or necklace, or via a phone app. Many systems have speakers which allow the call centre to speak directly to you and ask if you are ok and what is needed. It might also be a good idea to look into home security systems as well, as this can provide them with complete security in their homes. The elderly are vulnerable to attack, especially if nefarious individuals know they live alone.

Installing Grab Rails

Grab rails can help in many areas of the house. Having them in the bath or shower and next to the toilet would be most helpful. But they can also be useful near the bed and in other areas of the house, to help keep balance and stability while moving around.

Widening Doorways

Widening doorways and passageways in the house is most useful. Especially if someone in the house is using a mobility aid such as a wheelchair or walking frame. The cost can vary depending on the placement of electrical switches, as to how much work would be involved.

Those are just a few of the many modifications that are available to help make the home safe and comfortable for an older or disabled person. Let me know your other suggestions in the comments.
