How to organise a group games night

collaborative guest post

Are you searching for a fun way to spend an evening? A games night is a great choice.

Whether you're into classic board games, card games or something a bit more interactive, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Here are several tips to help you organise a games night to remember.

Choose the right games

The key to a successful games night is picking games that suit your group’s size and preferences.

For instance, fun board games like Monopoly, Scrabble and Ticket to Ride have stood the test of time and remain crowd-pleasers.

When it comes to card games, the more modern Cards Against Humanity or What Do You Meme? are fantastic for a few laughs, while traditional favourites such as Whist or Gin Rummy can bring a nostalgic vibe.

If your gang enjoys a bit of movement and lively interaction, games like Twister or Charades are perfect for getting everyone involved.

Set the scene

Creating a welcoming environment can really set the tone for the night. Arrange your seating so everyone feels comfortable and can easily reach the games.

When it comes to lighting, soft, warm lights work wonders for that cosy feel - think lamps and fairy lights rather than harsh overhead bulbs.

Background music is also a great idea, but keep it low enough so it doesn’t drown out the chatter and laughter.

Adding some personal touches, like themed decorations or simple table settings, can make the whole evening feel special.

Provide fuel for fun

No games night is complete without snacks and drinks to keep energy levels up.

Choose easy-to-eat finger foods like crisps, popcorn or bite-sized treats. Cocktail sausages, scotch eggs, crackers, onion rings and mini pizzas are sure to go down well.

If you’ll be having a meal at some point in the evening, it’s best to eat away from your games to avoid messing up the game pieces or cards.

Don’t forget to consider any dietary restrictions or preferences your guests might have, so everyone’s covered.

Consider game night themes

If you really want to make your games night stand out, adding a theme is a fantastic way to do it.

For instance, you could choose a retro theme or enjoy classic favourites like slots, bingo or casino games. Or, choose a trivia theme to test your guests’ general knowledge.

Another option is a murder mystery that immerses your guests in a “whodunit”.

For those who love dressing up, encourage guests to come in a costume tied to your theme to add an extra layer of excitement.

With a bit of thoughtful planning and a splash of creativity, your games night will be one to remember. Now, gather your guests, shuffle those cards and get ready for a cracking night of fun!
