Lockdown family exercise ideas

collaborative post

With schools shut and families in lockdown, fortunately, we are able to get out and about to do some exercise. Luckily there are simple and easy ways we ensure that our family stay healthy even though we can only get out once a day. I’ve put together a quick guide to show you the best ways you and your family can get out under the circumstances.

Bike rides

Heading out on your bicycle is one of the easiest ways of not only staying fit but also covering longer distances in the short amount of time you have. Alternatively, if you don’t feel comfortable on a bike, you can always grab a tricycle. If you have young children, these Electric Child Carrier Tricycles from Jorvik which can carry one child on the front whilst you cycle along are ideal for getting out and about.

Cycling is a great way of seeing parts of your neighbourhood you may not have seen before. You can also cycle around public parks or any scenic spots nearby. Check out Epicbicycles to learn more about the benefits of cycling for your body.

Use a Garmin

You can track the family exercise and progress on a smart watch. That makes it all a bit more fun and you can aim to break the family's best times and increase the distance you go each week. You can keep it stylish with a variety of garmin bands.

Running/Jogging

You may have seen all the campaigns to get people out and about, including the NHS 5K. If you download apps like Strava you can track your runs and exercise. With children not having PE with schools being shut, you can take them on short runs to make sure they stay healthy. Try and make the runs fun and not too difficult to ensure they stay interested. For example, a run around the park might be a good idea, with a reward at the end of the run.

Joe Wicks online classes

Joe Wicks has hit the headlines for his range of online YouTube fitness classes and tutorials, with some even designed to replace kids PE lessons. These lessons are great to not only replace PE lessons in the school downtime but also, if the weather is bad which, lets face it, in the UK would not be surprising, you can stay fit and healthy whilst at home.

There are other great online courses and fitness classes on YouTube. Put in a quick search into the search bar for what you’re wanting and there’s bound to be something.

A walk

Last but not least, heading out for a walk around your neighbourhood is great to just get out and get some fresh air. Sometimes, an hour’s walk is all you need to make sure you don’t go insane being stuck in your home non-stop! Map yourself out a local route that you and the kids will love! Try and aim for around 10,000 steps a day.

This is the recommended amount of steps we should be doing daily and you can use step tracker apps to track exactly how many steps you’re doing in a day. Just make sure you have your phone with you to track them!

These are some of the best ways you can get out with your family during lockdown. Of course, I’m always open to any ideas you may have for other exercises that you can do with your family. If you have any tips or suggestions, please comment below, I’d love to hear from you!
