Tips for Planning a Family Holiday to Spain

collaborative post

There is nothing like a trip to Spain to bring the whole family together. The climate is amazing, the people are awesome and the scenery is breathtaking. Spain is very kid-friendly and caters so well to families. Plus there are so many great things for families to explore in Spain including beaches, castles, waterparks and boat trips.

There is nothing not to love about Spain. It is the perfect family holiday destination. To help you get started, here are some tips for planning a family holiday to Spain.

Research Locations

There are so many holiday resorts in Spain, so narrowing down which location is right for you can be tricky. Some resorts are known for great nightlife others for Michelin-star food and others for family fun and attractions. And some have a combination of all of these plus more!

That is why it is critical to research any location you are considering going to. It's good to check reviews on Trip Advisor, Google and other sites online before making your decision.

You can search things such as:

  • is (location in question) kid-friendly

  • does (location in question) have a vibrant nightlife (you may or may not want that)

  • is (location in question) safe at night

  • things to do with kids in (location in question)

The answers to these questions will help you figure out if the location you are looking at will be suitable for your family.

Once you decide on the town or city of your choice, you then need to look at maps and figure out which area you'd like to stay in. Do you want to be near the beach, restaurants, nightlife, attractions, shops, and grocery stores or be secluded away from the busy areas?

To Rent a Car or Not to Rent

This is a big decision and ties closely into the choice of your location of choice and where within that town or city you'd like to stay. If you want somewhere that is away from the busy parts, you will need to consider renting a car or find out if there is public transportation that runs to the section you want to stay.

Also, if you want to explore other towns or go to attractions that are further from a walking distance, then renting a car is a good option. If you have a family with more than 4 members, it can be tricky to get a taxi in smaller towns in Spain. So check out where you want to explore and see if the public transportation with work for you or not, and you will know if renting a car is the right choice for your family.

Consider Fully Inclusive vs. Self-Catering

Nice work - you have your perfect place and location chosen, now what type of accommodation will suit your family best?

If you go for self-catering you can choose an apartment, house or villa where you will either make your own meals or eat out. If you go for a hotel or apartment that has partial or full meals included in the price, then you have some or all of your meals provided.

It is of course really important to research the place you are looking to stay, especially if you plan to have meals included there. You don't want to be unhappy with the food after paying for it for your holiday.

Amenities

You have done a lot of work now it is down to the final amenities to figure out. Everyone has their own priorities of what they'd like to have available to them on their holiday. Here are some of the most important things to consider - whether they matter to your family or not is up to you.

Some amenities for your consideration:

  • Air conditioning or Heat (depending on the time of year)

  • Washing Machine

  • Dryer

  • WiFi

  • Free Parking

  • A kitchen or kitchenette

  • Dishwasher

  • A place to hang towels

  • Towels included

  • Pool

Depending on whether or not you want to cook meals and what type of family holiday you'd like you can narrow down which of these amenities are the most important to have.

Length of Stay and Time of Year

Lastly of course is when is the best time for your family to enjoy the holiday. You need to think about what suits each member of the family. Consider if you want peak temperatures or it to be warm but not hot or to go in the fully off-season. That will depend if you want the beach. Some families can't be that flexible with school and work schedules but if you can, it is worth considering these options.

Best of luck planning your family trip to Spain! I know you will have a fabulous time with a little advanced research you will pick the best place. Enjoy!
