Beauty Basics: A Simple Guide to Makeup Brushes

collaborative post

If you love beauty, you know how important makeup brushes are. After all, makeup brushes are the way we apply makeup so perfectly and beautifully every time! Without brushes, we wouldn’t be able to do many different makeup looks.

Learning about makeup brushes can be intimidating, as there are many different types out there. We’ve written this guide to help you out. Below, we’ll share everything we know about makeup brushes, including their parts, the types of brushes, and why quality brushes matter.

The Parts of a Makeup Brush

Before we jump into the different types of makeup brushes, we should talk about the basic parts of a makeup brush.

Handle

The handle, of course, is the long part of the brush that you hold to apply your makeup. You should always look for a brush with a comfortable handle that you can maneuver easily.

Bristles

The bristles are the soft part of the brush to which you apply the makeup. Bristles come in many different materials and can be synthetic or natural.

Ferrule

The ferrule is the metal piece that connects the handle to the bristles. Without the ferrule, your bristles would fall out of the handle easily.

Types of Makeup Brushes

You can’t use the same type of makeup brush for every type of makeup. After all, it would be impossible to apply eyeliner with a fluffy powder brush! Here are the basic types of makeup brushes you’ll need to do a full face of makeup.

Foundation Brush

This is the most basic brush you can have. A foundation brush helps you apply either liquid or cream foundation smoothly for a flawless base. Though foundation brushes are still very common, some people have moved to beauty blenders to apply their foundation and use other brushes for the rest.

Powder Brush

Powder brushes are big, fluffy brushes used to apply loose or pressed powder to your face. This is often done to set a foundation and to help reduce the shine on your face. You’ll want to gently sweep it over your face after applying foundation.

Blush Brush

A blush brush helps apply blush to your cheeks. This brush often comes with its bristles at an angle to give a soft and diffused effect on your cheekbones as you swipe your blush out.

Concealer Brush

A concealer brush is much smaller than the previous brushes for precise application. You’ll use this brush to apply concealer to small blemishes or the underside of your eyes.

Eyeshadow Brush

Eyeshadow brushes come in different shapes and sizes depending on the effects you want. Bigger brushes are great for blending and shading out eyeshadow, while smaller ones are greater for precision on your eyelids.

Eyeliner Brush

An eyeliner brush often has a fine point. This lets you create sharp lines for your eyeliner, though some may come with a larger brush to smudge your eyeliner for a softer appearance.

Why Quality Matters

Not all makeup brushes are built the same. Though it can be easy to cheap out, you really want to invest in some quality brushes.

Brushes of higher quality will pick up and distribute products more evenly on your skin, giving you a flawless appearance. They also tend to be more gentle on the skin and cause less irritation.

Plus, quality brushes tend to be more durable. They will last you a long time, so you don’t have to replace them as often.

Final Thoughts

Makeup brushes are an essential part of your makeup collection. Always ensure you invest in some quality brushes and have the correct types of brushes for your needs. As long as you treat them with care, you’ll have beautiful, professional results every time you use them.
